Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching

Shirley Ogletree

Shirley Ogletree

Shirley Ogletree, a Professor in the Department of Psychology, joined the Texas State faculty in 1977 after earning her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Michigan.  Since that time she has taught a wide variety of psychology courses ranging from teaching theater sections to individual studies classes.  In addition, for many semesters she has met approximately weekly with undergraduates who are interested in research during fall and spring semesters.  As a result of her work with individual studies students and students in her research group, Dr. Ogletree has co-authored publications and convention presentations with over 100 undergraduates at Texas State.  Dr. Ogletree’s former students have been admitted to doctoral programs, to medical school, and to law school and are now pursuing a wide range of careers.  Dr. Ogletree’s teaching has been recognized by Alpha Chi, by Foundations of Excellence, and by the Nontraditional Students Organization.

Paige Haber-Curran

Paige Haber-Curran

Paige Haber-Curran is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education.  She earned her Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from the University of San Diego, M.A. in College Student Personnel from the University of Maryland, and her B.S.B.A. in Business Management and B.A. in German Studies from the University of Arizona.  Dr. Haber-Curran is Program Coordinator for the Student Affairs in Higher Education program; as the one full-time faculty member for the program, she is responsible for all student advising and curriculum development.  She has enhanced and grown the internship program and introduced career development initiatives into the curriculum.  She is preparing the first study-abroad course for the program in partnership with Semester at Sea.  Dr. Haber-Curran is recognized internationally as a leadership educator and speaks nationally on topics of effective teaching and facilitation.  Bridging teaching and scholarly practice, Dr. Haber-Curran has published research and practical pieces on innovative classroom pedagogy.

Melinda Villagrán

Melinda Villagrán
Department of Communication Studies

Melinda Villagrán is a Professor and Chair-elect in the Department of Communication Studies.  She earned her Ph.D. in Communication at the University of Oklahoma, and a B.A in Government and Politics at the University of Texas at Dallas.  Her primary research program investigates the intersections among organizational communication, culture, and health care practice.  Dr. Villagrán has published 66 peer-reviewed books, journal articles, and book chapters on applied communication topics, and has received over two million dollars in external funding for her work.  Currently, she is the Principal Investigator on a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration examining communication about alcohol and substance abuse among Latino/a young adults.  Her program of research has examined topics such as communication about cancer, misperceptions of the health care system, organizational and cultural barriers to cancer care, underutilization of mental health services among Latinos, social identity, and health care decision-making.

Ting Liu

Ting Liu
Department of Health and Human Performance

Ting Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance.  She earned her Ph.D. in Kinesiology from the University of Texas at Austin, M.S. in Exercise and Sports Studies from Boise State University, and B.S. in Physical Education from Beijing Sport University. Dr. Liu’s research is focused on cognitive and motor skill development and learning in children with autism spectrum disorder. She has 17 peer-reviewed publications, five internal grants, and three external contracts. Her scholarly achievements have been recognized both locally and nationally. Dr. Liu was the recipient of two College of Education research awards and the 2011 Lolas E. Halverson Motor Development and Learning Young Investigator National Award. Dr. Liu has established and directed Autism summer camp since 2010. This camp has provided an innovative social, communication, and physical activity forum for the underserved population of children with autism in San Marcos as well as hands-on service learning and research opportunities to Texas State University students.

Roselyn E. Morris

Roselyn E. Morris
Department of Accounting

Roselyn Morris, a Professor in the Department of Accounting, holds a Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Houston, M.S. in Accounting from the University of Houston, and B.S. in Mathematics from Texas Christian University.  Her institutional service includes leadership and membership on numerous university, college, and department taskforces/committees.  Most recently, she was the faculty liaison for the AACSB initial accounting accreditation.  Her professional service features significant regional and national leadership as well as committee involvement with various academic and CPA associations including the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, Accounting Education Foundation, Central Texas Higher Education Authority, and American Accounting Association.  In the community, she served as treasurer and president of Junior Service League, co-chair of San Marcos Youth Summit, and was named to the San Marcos Women’s Hall of Fame.

Janet R. Hale

Janet R. Hale
Department of Finance and Economics

Janet Hale is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Finance and Economics.  She earned her J.D. from St. Mary’s School of Law, M.A. in Philosophy from Baylor, and a B.A. with Honors from the University of Arkansas in Philosophy where she was co-captain of the nationally ranked swim team.  As an Italian dual citizen, Dr. Hale’s service emphasizes internationalization and sustainability, serving on United Nations PRME Committees, chairing McCoy Ethics, Diversity and Sustainability Committee and being faculty sponsor of award-winning Net Impact.  Licensed by the United States Supreme Court, Hale is active professionally and as an officer in the Academy of Legal Studies of Business. Her service activities focus on resource recovery and data collection for Circuit of the Americas—Formula One, SXSW, ESPN Summer X GAMES 2014-2017 and launching Awake Aware America for “at promise” students blending technology with sustainability themes in eight cities recognized by President Obama.

Department of History


Jesús F. de la Teja is the Jerome H. and Catherine E. Supple Professor of Southwestern Studies and Director of the Center for the Study of the Southwest.  He was the inaugural State Historian of Texas (2007- 2009) and is a past president of the Texas State Historical Association.  He has published extensively on early Texas, most recently Recollections of a Tejano Life: Antonio Menchaca in Texas History.  For his promotion of a greater understanding of Texas history, he has received state, national, and international recognition.  He is a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association and a member of the Texas Institute of Letters and the Philosophical Society of Texas.  He is a recipient of the Americanism Medal from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and of the Captain Alonso de León Medal from the Historical, Geographical, and Statistical Society of Nuevo León, Mexico.
